To provide a building that responds to a unique educational program, the project faced several challenges, including limited time to expand a one-building (K-12) school district into two buildings.
Exterior spaces were organized to achieve efficient use of the 44-acre site, which is shared with a new athletic complex on donated acreage. Community-funded improvement including a new football/track stadium, baseball fields, a future cross-country course, expanded parking area and a separate bus loop, faculty/visitor and event parking.
The interior zoning of the building keeps the athletics and arts area—gymnasium, auditorium, art, industrial technology and music/band—separate from the quiet classroom, computer and media functions. The zoning also allows these areas to be used for evening and weekend events without compromising building security.
The media resource center, including the technology labs, is at the hub of the academic wing to facilitate access. The design concept provides flexibility for future telecommunications systems linked to each classroom.
