Project Name: Lock One Park
Project Type: New Construction
Location: New Bremen, Ohio
Completion Date: 1997
The New Bremen Tree Commission was chartered in 1994 and began to look at their downtown park as a possible project in the summer of 1995. This small park is at the intersection of two major state routes dissecting the village and is adjacent to the remaining Miami & Erie canal lock. The goal was to develop a green space which would commemorate Lock One, the first Lock north of the Loramie Summit where the Miami & Erie canal begins its descent to Lake Erie and creates a focal point for the Village. This park features a water course mirroring the canal brick paving providing a historical tie to the original brick walks and street pavers in New Bremen. The circulation system accepts the water course and the Lock. Design of the park was coordinated closely with the Bremenfest Committee which handles the Village festival held on this site each August. Signature brick were sold by the Tree Commission, as a memory walk to signify the fire department members, veterans, local citizens and donors.
The park was constructed entirely of privately raised funds, cooperatives businesses, contractors, volunteer labor and Tree Commission coordination
